How to Measure Conversions From AI Search
Counting the people AI assistants send you is the easy half. The useful half is knowing whether they call, book or buy. That takes one step many sites skip: telling your analytics what a conversion is.
Step 1: Decide what counts as a conversion
Pick the one action that means business for you. Good first goals are pages a visitor only reaches after acting:
- the thank-you page after a contact or quote form
- a booking or appointment confirmation page
- an order confirmation page
- a page that only signed-up customers see
A page-visit goal is the most reliable kind, because it needs nothing beyond the script tag you already installed.
Step 2: Create the goal in AppWT Analytics
- Open your dashboard and find Goal & Conversion Tracking.
- Choose + Add Goal and give it a plain name, such as "Quote request sent".
- Pick a goal type. The options are page visit, custom event, click, form submission, file download, phone click and custom.
- Pick how the address should match: URL contains, exact match, starts with, or a pattern (regex). For a thank-you page, "URL contains" with
/thank-youis usually enough. - Add a monetary value if the action is worth a known amount, then save.
From that moment, every visit that reaches the goal is recorded as a conversion, once per goal per session, and stored with the visit that produced it. A goal does not look back at visits from before you saved it.
Step 3: Tag the links you control
Add UTM tags to links you publish in emails, social posts and ads, for example ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email. Each tagged visit then carries its source even when the browser hides the referrer.
Many links clicked inside ChatGPT already carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. The guide on tracking ChatGPT traffic shows how often that tag is the only clue a visit came from ChatGPT.
Step 4: Read the results
- Goal list: each goal shows its conversions and its conversion rate for the dates you choose.
- UTM Campaign Performance: conversions for each source and campaign, so visits tagged
utm_source=chatgpt.comshow their own conversion count next to your newsletter and ads. - Traffic Sources: AI referrals by assistant, kept apart from AI crawlers, so the people you compare are people.
Read the numbers with care
- Small numbers swing. When an assistant has sent only a handful of visitors, one sale can double or halve its rate. Compare rates only after each source has sent a meaningful number of visitors.
- Some AI visits hide. A link pasted out of an AI answer arrives as direct traffic, so its conversion lands under direct too. Treat AI conversion counts as a floor.
- Crawlers never convert. Leave AI crawler hits out of any conversion rate. The guide on AI referrals vs AI crawlers explains why.
Every signal AppWT Analytics uses, and the visits it cannot attribute, are listed on How AppWT Detects AI Traffic.
Common questions
Do goals count conversions from visits that happened before I created them?
No. A goal starts counting at the moment you save it. It does not look back at older visits, so create your goals before you start comparing sources.
How many conversions does one visitor create?
At most one per goal in a session. A visitor who reloads the thank-you page three times in one session still counts once for that goal.
Why do my AI conversion numbers look small?
AI assistants often send fewer visitors than search engines, and some AI visits arrive with no signal and are counted as direct traffic. Judge a rate only after an assistant has sent a meaningful number of visitors, and treat AI conversion counts as a floor.
